How it works

IMG_4311.JPG

Discovery Project is an independent business that develops and delivers project based educational experiences.  We work together with distance learning schools registered in B.C. to offer fully accredited high school courses.

We believe:

  • God Given - The drive to explore, discover and create is God given and should be encouraged and supported.

  • Great People - Formal education should contribute to the development of great people; thoughtful, kind, skilled and creative.

  • Proven – Educational activities are proven effective by scientific research on the topics of cognition, learning, understanding, and remembering.

  • Outside - Natural environments provide peaceful and inspiring spaces, optimal for learning.

How do I sign up? - Apply on our courses page.  If your application is accepted we will send you an email with further information and instructions for payment.  Once payment is received, your spot in the project will be locked in.  In order to receive graduation credit, you will need to cross-enroll with Anchor Academy. Once you are confirmed for our course we can provide detailed instructions on cross-enrolling.

What if I'm already enrolled in a distribute learning (DL) or homeschool program? - Anchor Academy has already reviewed our programs and certifies that they meet BC's required curriculum. They will provide an official course grade and graduation credit.  If you are registered with a different school it will be up to your specific school/teacher to accept our curriculum and provide you with a grade and credit.

What does the course fee include? - The cost of tuition includes all instruction, materials, food and lodging while at our discovery camp.  It does not include any cross-enrollment fees or travel to/from our camp location (or designated meeting place).

What about the food? - The food is delicious and prepared fresh!  If you have any health related food concerns we may be able to accommodate on a case by case basis.  We do not have a nut free kitchen at this time.

Are the projects, and/or camp conditions physically challenging? - Projects take place at our off-grid discovery camp and various un-serviced wilderness locations (depending on the specific project).  We take every opportunity to be outside and active but it is not a boot camp.  Students of all physical conditioning can participate.  We also interact with all manner of weather conditions so appropriate clothing and gear ensure we stay positive and productive.

Is it safe? - Yes.  We are situated in nature but we are not involved in extreme wilderness activities.  To ensure the safety of our teams we take the following actions:

  •  Use only high-quality equipment and gear

  •  Ensure staff have extensive wilderness experience, first aid training and carry first aid and emergency kits

  •  Carry Zoleo emergency satellite communicators at all wilderness locations

  •  Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE, such as safety glasses, gloves etc)

Do you have insurance? - Yes - you can't have fun anymore without liability insurance:)

What if I'm from outside BC? - You're more than welcome to join us!  As far as receiving school graduation credits, that will depend on your location and current education situation. We will work with you on a case by case basis to try and ensure your Discovery Project education is recognized.
